Here is a video of me singing a melody I wrote to accompany the Maha Mantra or “Great Mantra”. I’ve recorded it with space for you to sing the melody back to me, which is a yoga practice known as Kirtan. Kirtan is an ancient and popular from of Bhakti yoga. The Bhakti yoga path uses the emotions and devotion to lead one to self-realization.
This particular mantra or chant combines the names of Krishna and Rama, two of the most well-known avatars of the archetypal deva Vishnu, also known as ‘The Sustainer’. In Vedic mythology Vishnu incarnates in human from from time to time to teach the dharma thus helping to sustain order in the universe.
The words are:
- Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
- Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare
- Hare Krishna
- Hare Rama
