This is an introduction to meditation I taught at the Mahāpatha Popup just before leaving for California in August. It covers what I see as the basics of Zazen or seated meditation which are: posture, breath, and awareness, as well as walking meditation or Kinhin.
Please think of these instructions are a starting point and by no means exhaustive. I’ve been meditating for over 20 years now and the practice continues to unfold for me. The title of Suzuki Roshi’s book ‘Zen Mind Beginners Mind’ is very apt when it comes to Zen which basically means meditation.
I decided to make this recording free for anyone it could potentially help. In my experience, it is difficult, if not impossible, to start a truly transformative home meditative practice without a good and supportive teacher and/or community. However, not everyone has those things available to them when starting out. So I am offering this recording as perhaps a reminder for those who have received meditation instruction from me in the past as well as perhaps an introduction to the practice for those new to it.
If you are looking to connect with a meditation teacher or community in the Atlanta area or would like to receive these instructions in person, I will be offering meditation instruction again on September 28th at the Popup from 7pm to 9pm. Please feel free to join us. Another alternative is the Atlanta Soto Zen Center which is the community that I started meditating with.
